The Foundation in sequence

Timeline and closure

The Foundation's story moved from a support group to a non-profit institution with residential programmes, conferences and publications. Its organisational history ended in 2021.

This is a historical reference, not medical advice. Anyone considering a lifestyle programme alongside treatment should discuss it with their treating clinicians.

1975 · The origins in the Foundation's account

The Foundation began its own history with Dr Ian Gawler's bone-cancer diagnosis in 1975 and the amputation of his right leg. It described his subsequent focus on nutrition, meditation, attitude and support.

Those subjects later appeared within the organisation's educational approach. The founder's experience explained part of its identity, while remaining separate from any conclusion about another person's illness or care.

1981 · A cancer support group

In 1981, Ian Gawler established what the Foundation described as Australia's first active cancer support group. This was the support-group beginning of the work that later developed into the Foundation.

Shared discussion and the relationships around illness remained visible in later programme descriptions. Effective Support eventually became one of the seven essential elements.

1983 · The non-profit Foundation

The Gawler Cancer Foundation was founded as a non-profit organisation in 1983. It also became known as The Gawler Foundation.

The organisation's work developed around residential education and the Yarra Valley Living Centre. The early Foundation overview described its public identity and programme categories.

1995–1999 · Mind, Immunity & Health

The Foundation convened the Mind, Immunity & Health Conferences during these years. Conference discussion formed part of its broader interest in research and mind-body subjects.

Later conference material used the title Profound Healing – Sustainable Wellbeing. Conference activity remained distinct from the residential courses, even where the topics overlapped.

2002 · The multiple sclerosis programme

The Foundation's history dated the introduction of its multiple sclerosis programme to 2002. It used the title Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis and was based on the book of that name.

The MS programme reference described its place within the former residential model.

2004 · A wider wellbeing range

The Foundation recorded the introduction of a broader wellbeing retreat range in 2004. Later names included Living in Balance, Set Your Compass and several meditation and food programmes.

Professional education and meditation teacher training also formed part of the organisation's work over its later years. The programme range changed as different themes and formats were introduced.

The later programme

Outsmart Cancer became a prominent programme name in the final period. Its material distinguished Fundamentals from The Next Step and described residential and online delivery.

The later programme reference explained those formats without treating them as current offerings.

2021 · Closure and the centre's next chapter

The Foundation entered receivership and ceased operations in May 2021. Its membership voted to hand the Yarra Valley Living Centre to the Brahma Kumaris.

That transfer concerned the place after the Foundation's closure. The Living Centre reference described the setting during the Foundation's chapter, and the history page connected the dates in this timeline into the wider organisational story.
